The Punjab government has decided to extend winter vacations in schools and colleges across the province due to a continuing cold wave and a forecast of extremely low temperatures in the coming days.
Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect students from health risks associated with prolonged exposure to severe winter conditions. As per the revised schedule, educational institutions in Punjab will now remain closed until January 19, 2026.
The move follows reports of persistently low temperatures and dense fog in several parts of the province, which have disrupted daily routines and raised concerns about student safety, particularly for those who travel long distances to attend school.
Education department officials said the extension aims to reduce the risk of illness among children and to ensure that students are not required to attend classes in unsafe weather conditions.
Parents and school administrations have welcomed the decision, calling it a sensible step in view of the harsh weather. Many, however, said they hoped that authorities would continue to monitor conditions closely and act promptly if the cold spell intensifies further.
