X has started rolling out its long-awaited Chat platform, marking the biggest overhaul of its messaging system since the company introduced DMs. The new experience replaces the platform’s basic inbox with a feature set that feels closer to modern messaging apps. It now includes voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing, message deletion, and new privacy tools like end-to-end encryption and screenshot alerts.
Chat is available on iOS and the web, with an Android release listed as “coming soon.” X also confirmed that a voice memo option is in development, allowing users to send quick audio messages.
The company has spent months teasing this upgrade. Earlier in the year, X launched an early version of encrypted messaging but paused it in May to fix undisclosed issues. The new rollout suggests those early limits have changed. According to an updated help center article, X now supports encrypted group messages and encrypted media. However, metadata, including recipient details, is still not protected.
The help center also acknowledges that the system does not prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. This means a malicious insider, or even X under legal pressure, could potentially compromise an encrypted conversation without alerting the sender or receiver. The company says it is developing tools that will allow users to confirm the authenticity of their encrypted chats.
With these upgrades, X is pushing its messaging service closer to a full chat app, although many security-focused features are still a work in progress.
