Yesterday, Yum Brands announced it will sell its Pizza Hut chain for $2.7 billion. Currently, the fast-food market faces intense competition. Consumers are spending cautiously. As a result, the pizza unit continues to struggle.
Why is Yum Dumping Pizza Hut?
Rising inflation and elevated commodity costs heavily weigh on US pizza chains. Furthermore, sustained demand weakness plagues the industry. A major new factor is the growing adoption of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. Consequently, these popular medications encourage consumers to choose healthier foods over traditional fast food.
Last year, Yum Brands explored strategic options for the chain. Pizza Hut suffered through several quarters of declining sales. In fact, the brand accounted for only 12% of Yum’s total revenue in 2025. The pizza unit simply fell behind Yum’s other fast-casual dining brands, specifically Taco Bell.
The $2.7 Billion Split
The massive sale involves two separate buyers. Yum China will acquire Pizza Hut operations in Mainland China for $1.2 billion. Meanwhile, private equity firm LongRange Capital will buy the rest of the global business for $1.5 billion.
This final deal follows exclusive talks between Yum and LongRange that began in May. Previously, in April, reports showed that Sycamore Partners and Apollo Global Management also vied for the pizza chain.
What Remains for Yum Brands?
Moving forward, Yum Brands will operate only two chains: Taco Bell and KFC. Yum Brands CEO Chris Turner stated, “These transactions enable Yum! to be a more focused company.” Investors reacted positively to the news. Consequently, Yum shares rose about 1% in premarket trading.
Pizza Hut has a long corporate history. PepsiCo originally acquired the chain in 1977. Later, in 1997, PepsiCo spun off Pizza Hut alongside KFC and Taco Bell. Together, they formed a restaurant company that officially took the name Yum Brands in 2002. Today, Yum China Holdings operates as a Shanghai-based spin-off. It currently owns and franchises more than 18,000 stores in the country, including roughly 13,000 KFC locations.
