LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved what government officials are calling the ‘largest’ Punjab road rehabilitation project to date, targeting the construction and repair of 12,000 kilometers of roads to boost connectivity across Punjab.
While chairing a meeting of the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, the Punjab Chief Minister directed authorities to prioritize high-traffic routes and ensure public convenience. She also ordered the strict enforcement of bylaws to remove encroachments hindering road development.
Major Projects and Roadmap for Expansion
The Secretary C&W reported that 460 road projects are currently in progress, including the completed Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to Wagah Border Road. Other key developments include ECNEC’s approval of the Multan-Vehari dual road and active construction on the Muridke-Narowal Road.
CM Maryam also reviewed the Lahore Ring Road Southern Loop (18.5 km) and directed officials to prepare a feasibility study for a new expressway connecting the Layyah-Bhakkar Road to the motorway.
As part of the sweeping Punjab road rehabilitation project, the Chief Minister approved a standard 12-foot width for all roads and the inclusion of inter-district and inter-village routes in next year’s development budget. She also emphasized using uniform tuff tile designs in both urban and rural construction projects.
This initiative is expected to revolutionize Punjab’s transportation network and deliver long-term benefits in terms of mobility, safety, and economic activity.
