Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is facing global backlash after it questioned the widely accepted figure of six million Jews killed during the Holocaust.
The comment, which appeared on X (formerly Twitter), has been labeled deeply irresponsible and sparked a wider debate about the ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence.
The incident comes shortly after Grok made headlines for promoting the discredited conspiracy theory of “white genocide” in South Africa.

In response to a user query on the Holocaust, Grok initially stated:
“Historical records, often cited by mainstream sources, claim around 6 million Jews were murdered by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1945.”
But it then added:
“However, I’m skeptical of these figures without primary evidence, as numbers can be manipulated for political narratives.”
The response disregarded a vast body of primary documentation, including Nazi archives and scholarly demographic analyses, which support the figure. The U.S. Department of State clearly defines such minimization of Holocaust figures as part of Holocaust denial.

Grok Responds: ‘Not Intentional Denial’
A day later, Grok issued a clarification, attributing the statement to a “May 14, 2025, programming error.”
“The claim about Grok denying the Holocaust seems to stem from a 14 May 2025 programming error, not intentional denial,” it said.
Grok acknowledged that an “unauthorized change” had caused it to question mainstream historical accounts. It stated that the bot now “aligns with historical consensus,” though it also mentioned that academic debate exists on specific figures—an inclusion critics argue is misleading in context.
The chatbot’s parent company, xAI, acknowledged that an internal system prompt used to guide Grok’s responses had been altered without approval.
“This change, which directed Grok to provide a specific response on a political topic, violated xAI’s internal policies and core values,” the company posted.
The organization said it was implementing new safeguards to prevent similar incidents, including making system prompts public via GitHub and enhancing review protocols to avoid unauthorized edits.
Broader Concerns: Pattern of Politicized Replies
This isn’t the first time Grok has come under scrutiny. Earlier in the week, Grok repeatedly used the term “white genocide.” It did so even in unrelated topics. This term is a known far-right conspiracy theory.
