Port Qasim Gains 9th Spot In World Bank Rankings

Port Qasim has secured the 9th spot in the World Bank rankings of most improved container ports, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime reforms and modernization drive. The achievement underscores the country’s efforts to strengthen trade infrastructure despite ongoing challenges in logistics and exports.

The World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2024, compiled in partnership with S&P Global Market Intelligence, placed Port Qasim among the top 20 ports worldwide for operational progress. From 2020 to 2024, Port Qasim improved its performance score by 35.2 points, reflecting efficiency gains in reducing cargo dwell time, enhancing berth operations, and adopting digital solutions.

Ecuador’s Posorja port led the global rankings with a 72.8-point improvement, followed by Gothenburg in Sweden, Marseille in France, and Philadelphia in the United States. Other notable ports making significant strides included Mawan in China, Tin Can Island in Nigeria, Port Said in Egypt, and Lagos in Nigeria. India’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port ranked just below Port Qasim at 10th place.

The CPPI evaluates ports based on key factors such as maritime connectivity and hinterland connectivity. Maritime connectivity reflects a port’s access to international shipping routes, while hinterland connectivity measures how efficiently containers are transported inland by road, rail, and waterways. Ports offering frequent and reliable options typically score higher and become more attractive to global shippers.
