Punjab Imposes Heavy Fines to Combat Lahore’s Rising Air Pollution
The Punjab government has intensified its anti-smog campaign as a thick haze continues to shroud Lahore and its surrounding districts. With air quality levels declining daily, authorities have launched a province-wide enforcement drive targeting polluting vehicles, factories, and brick kilns.
According to the Punjab Police, 22 cases have been registered during the crackdown, while fines worth Rs. 3 million have been imposed on 1,539 violators. Another 53 individuals received warnings for non-compliance. Officials recorded 1,317 smoke-emitting vehicles, eight industrial offenders, and 14 brick kilns contributing to the worsening pollution. So far, more than 82,601 violations have resulted in fines exceeding Rs. 210 million.
DIG Traffic Punjab, Waqas Nazir, has directed all Chief Traffic Officers (CTOs) and District Traffic Officers (DTOs) to strictly implement new pollution-control measures. In his official letter, he made it clear that vehicles emitting thick smoke would be immediately penalized.
To improve monitoring and coordination, joint inspection teams will be formed with officers from the traffic police, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the transport department. These teams will focus on high-risk areas, including highways, industrial belts, and agricultural zones.
DIG Nazir emphasized that all drivers must ensure their headlights, mirrors, and indicators are in working condition, especially during foggy winter nights. He warned that smog-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) would be enforced with zero tolerance across Punjab.
Authorities believe the intensified campaign will help reduce pollution levels and improve visibility on major routes as the smog season deepens.
