Epa Seizes Punjab University Buses In Major Smog Crackdown

The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken decisive action against vehicular pollution in Lahore today. In a significant move, the agency banned and seized several Punjab University buses. Inspection teams found these vehicles emitting excessive smoke during routine checks on “Canal Road”.

During the inspection, officials stopped multiple university buses. They discovered the vehicles were releasing thick emissions, directly contributing to the city’s worsening air quality. Furthermore, a closer examination revealed a critical compliance failure. The buses lacked the mandatory environmental fitness certificates required for operation.

Consequently, the EPA seized the buses on the spot. The agency has also initiated legal proceedings under the Environmental Protection Act.

This operation is not an isolated incident. The EPA confirmed that this action is part of a broader crackdown. The agency is specifically targeting smoke-emitting vehicles operated by universities, colleges, schools, and hospitals.

Officials have identified ageing buses and heavy vehicles as major sources of dangerous emissions. Therefore, the provincial government has intensified environmental enforcement to combat the severe smog facing Lahore and other cities in Punjab.

The primary goal of this crackdown is to restrict unfit and poorly maintained vehicles. To ensure compliance, the EPA has deployed monitoring teams across the province. These teams will stop unfit vehicles from entering public roads.

Moreover, the agency issued a stern warning. Strict penalties will be imposed on any institution that continues to operate non-compliant vehicles. Authorities emphasise that reducing vehicular pollution is essential for protecting public health and improving air quality in the region.
