Pakistan is moving closer to introducing newly designed currency notes as the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has finalized all preparatory work and is now awaiting formal approval from the federal cabinet. Once cleared, the updated banknotes with enhanced security features could enter circulation later in 2026.
The State Bank of Pakistan, in coordination with the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC), has completed groundwork for issuing new Pakistani Rupee notes. According to officials, the redesigned currency will include modern security features aimed at reducing counterfeiting and improving durability. However, printing cannot begin until the federal cabinet gives its approval.
PSPC officials confirmed that while consultations with SBP are complete, final designs have not yet been officially handed over for printing. After approval, the printing process alone is expected to take at least two months.
Senior Manager Printing Amir Shams stated that the SBP is still evaluating whether the new notes will be launched in phases or released for all denominations at once. An official rollout schedule is expected to be announced later this year.
Pakistan has been planning a redesign of its currency notes for several years to align with international security standards and address long-standing concerns over fake currency. Similar upgrades in the past were rolled out gradually to ensure a smooth transition within the banking system and markets.
