The Punjab government has introduced a major green transport reform by banning the purchase of new petrol and diesel vehicles for most government departments, allowing only electric and hybrid vehicles under a new environment-focused policy announced on January 14, 2026.
According to official sources, the decision applies to all provincial departments except vehicles required for field operations, which have been exempted due to operational needs. The move is aimed at reducing fuel consumption, cutting carbon emissions, and lowering long-term government transport costs.
Chief Secretary Punjab said the province is “fully committed to promoting green energy and sustainable mobility,” adding that a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) policy will be introduced soon to further support the transition.
In another significant step, the provincial government has linked the approval of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for new petrol pumps with the mandatory installation of electric vehicle charging units. No new petrol pump will be allowed to operate unless it includes an EV charging facility.
Authorities have already issued NOCs for 170 new petrol pumps across 31 cities through the e-Biz Portal, including Faisalabad (29), Lahore (14), Bahawalpur (10), and nine each in Khanewal and Bahawalnagar. All newly approved pumps must comply with the EV charging requirement.
Punjab has been facing rising air pollution levels and increasing fuel import costs. This policy aligns with Pakistan’s broader climate commitments and global trends toward electric mobility. By integrating EV charging infrastructure into fuel stations, the government aims to make electric vehicles more accessible and practical for the public.
Experts believe the decision will encourage private EV adoption, attract investment in clean transport, and gradually reduce dependence on fossil fuels in the province.
