Basant 2026 has turned tragic in Lahore. The festivities have already resulted in numerous casualties and injuries within the first 48 hours. According to the Punjab Home Department’s control room, authorities have received reports of 118 Basant-related accidents so far.
Tragically, 6 people have lost their lives during the first two days of the festival. Four of these victims died after falling from rooftops while catching stray kites. Additionally, two young boys lost their lives in separate incidents. One fell while climbing an electric pole, and the other fell from a tree.
Furthermore, kite twine has caused significant harm. Approximately 112 injuries occurred specifically due to contact with sharp twine.
In response to the rising accident toll, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi has issued an appeal to Lahorites. He urged citizens to play their role in making Basant 2026 safe.
In a video message released this past Saturday, Dr. Qazi confirmed that the government is enforcing strict measures for the three-day festival. Consequently, the Police, Traffic Police, District Administration, Rescue 1122, and Health Department are actively performing their duties. Dr. Qazi also highlighted that the government has ensured the implementation of all safety protocols, including the mandatory installation of safety rods on motorcycles.
