The Punjab government has issued a notification implementing the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act 2026, approving name changes for six public-sector educational institutions across the province. The amendment also directs institutions to remove the word “University” from their names wherever applicable.
The institutions affected include Government College Lahore, Government College Faisalabad, Government College for Women Faisalabad, Government College for Women Sialkot, Government Sadiq College Bahawalpur, and Lahore College for Women Lahore.
The Punjab Higher Education Department has written to all vice-chancellors and rectors, directing them to implement the changes in accordance with the amended legislation.
However, the revised names will not affect the institutions’ existing powers, responsibilities, or functions related to higher education. The provincial government has instructed all relevant institutions to take the necessary steps to comply with the new law.
