Battlefield 6 Season 2 officially launches today, Tuesday, February 17. Publisher EA and developer Battlefield Studios are desperate for a win. Despite launching as the best-selling game of 2025, the shooter is currently fighting for its life.
The game initially received rave reviews and peaked at over 747,000 concurrent users on Steam. However, the last few months have been brutal. Since its October 2025 release, Battlefield 6 has lost 89% of its Steam player base. Consequently, recent user reviews have dropped to “mixed”.
Hoping for a Comeback
The development team is keenly aware of this rapid decline. According to a developer cited by CharlieIntel, the studio is “anxiously biting their nails” regarding today’s release. They are “hoping” that the new update will convince players to return or try the game for the first time.
After the disastrous launch of Battlefield 2042 in 2021, Battlefield 6 was supposed to be a return to form. Now, the pressure is on Season 2 to reverse the downward trend.
What’s New in Battlefield 6 Season 2?
The update is now live for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It brings fresh content to both the core game and its free-to-play Battle Royale counterpart, Battlefield REDSEC.
Key additions include:
- New Map: “Contaminated”, set at a German airbase in the European mountainside.
- Vehicles: The return of the iconic Little Bird helicopter from Battlefield 3.
- Arsenal: Several new weapons.
Content Concerns & Delays
This launch comes after a disappointing one-month delay. The season was originally scheduled for last month, but EA pushed the date to allow extra time for development and refinement based on player feedback.
Unfortunately, the roadmap has left many fans shocked. Despite the extra month, Season 2 launches with only one new Multiplayer map. A second map is not set to arrive until March 17. Players have criticised the roadmap for focusing more on limited-time modes and events than permanent map content.
Comparisons to its biggest competitor are unavoidable. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is currently releasing nine Multiplayer maps for its second season, five of which are brand-new. As Battlefield 6 struggles to retain players, many feel the franchise is “dropping the ball” against Black Ops 7’s monumental post-launch support.
