Fawad Sarwar, owner of a Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, has officially acquired the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) team, Jamaica, now named the Jamaica Kingsmen.
The franchise was unveiled at a press conference at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston, marking a new ownership era for the returning of T20 team in CPL.
Sarwar confirmed the team will compete as the Jamaica Kingsmen, rejecting the previous Jamaica Tallawahs name, following approval from both the CPL and Jamaican government authorities.
The new owner also announced the creation of a women’s cricket team, which will participate in a four-team competition planned during the summer CPL schedule in Jamaica.
Sports Minister Olivia Grange and Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said the government will provide long-term support to the Kingsmen franchise, assisting operational, promotional, and infrastructure initiatives under new ownership.
The men’s tournament is scheduled to begin in August, with Sabina Park hosting four matches, returning Jamaica to Caribbean Premier League action after the 2019 season hiatus.
The previous franchise owner, Kris Persaud, sold the team back to the CPL due to financial difficulties, highlighting the lack of sufficient governmental and local support at the time.
This acquisition makes Sarwar the first PSL franchise owner to hold a Caribbean Premier League team, expanding his cricket portfolio across international T20 competitions in multiple countries.
