Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially launched the PM Apna Ghar Programme yesterday, April 30. The government has allocated a massive Rs. 3.2 trillion for this nationwide initiative. Consequently, the state plans to construct 500,000 housing units over the next four years. Furthermore, citizens across the federal capital, all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir can utilize this scheme.

Apna Ghar Programme: Flexible Loan Terms for 10-Marla Homes
Under this new program, eligible individuals can secure housing loans of up to Rs. 10 million. Citizens can build these houses on land plots measuring up to 10 marlas, which also includes 5-marla and 7-marla options.
Moreover, the government has established a highly manageable 20-year repayment period. For the first 10 years, borrowers will pay a fixed 5% markup. Afterward, banks will charge the prevailing market rate for the remaining 10 years. To facilitate this massive rollout, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) recently relaxed key prudential requirements for housing finance under the broader “Wazir-e-Azam’s Apna Ghar Program – Ghar Ho Tu Apna” initiative earlier this week.
Initial Targets & Strict Accountability
For the first year, the state has set a clear target to fund 50,000 houses. Authorities have already earmarked Rs. 321 billion to finance this initial phase. During the launch ceremony in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz thanked Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and the SBP Governor for securing these funds.
Importantly, the Prime Minister announced he will personally review the program’s progress every single month. Therefore, the government will promptly remove any administrative hurdles. PM Shehbaz also explicitly warned the banking sector against unnecessary delays. High-performing banks will receive official recognition, whereas slow institutions will face strict accountability.
Fuel Relief & International Grants
Besides the flagship housing scheme, the government recently disbursed Rs. 1.2 billion digitally under the PM Fuel Package 2026. This specific initiative delivered immediate financial relief to over 32,000 beneficiaries. These include operators of buses, trucks, long-haul vehicles, and delivery vans actively struggling with rising fuel costs.
Meanwhile, international infrastructure support continues to arrive. The European Investment Bank’s global arm, EIB Global, has officially committed €160 million to Pakistan. The state will channel these funds to rebuild homes in Sindh and significantly improve water quality in Karachi.
