The U.S. Department of State has announced the phased closure of its Consulate General in Peshawar, marking a significant shift in its diplomatic operations in Pakistan.
According to an official statement issued on May 5, 2026, responsibilities related to diplomatic engagement in Peshawar and the wider Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region will be transferred to the U.S. Embassy Islamabad.
The decision, the State Department said, reflects its commitment to the safety of diplomatic personnel and more efficient management of resources.
Despite the closure, US officials emphasized that engagement with local stakeholders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will continue. The statement noted that Washington remains committed to strengthening ties with Pakistan and promoting economic cooperation, regional security, and bilateral relations.
The US mission in Pakistan will continue operating through its diplomatic posts in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.
The announcement comes amid evolving regional dynamics and operational considerations, though no specific security incident was cited as a direct reason for the closure.
