Fans have demanded a franchise revival for years. Finally, Capcom answered their calls. Yesterday, on June 2, the publisher revealed a massive surprise during the PlayStation State of Play. You can play the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo right now.
Furthermore, the demo is not restricted to a single console. PC, Xbox, and PlayStation gamers can all jump into the action today.

A Long-Awaited Return to the Edo Period
Capcom originally announced this highly anticipated game back in 2024. Now, a full 25 years after the original Onimusha: Warlords launched, players will finally return to Kyoto, Japan. The game takes place during the historical Edo period. You step into the shoes of Musashi, one of the nation’s most legendary swordsmen.
Currently, the playable demo lets you test the powerful Oni Gauntlet. Moreover, you will fight notable enemies like Genma and Sasaki Ganryu. If you play the demo and subsequently buy the full game, Capcom will reward you. Specifically, you receive the “Kubi Akari” charm, which proudly hangs on Musashi’s hip.
Brutal Combat & Demonic Transformations in Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Interestingly, Onimusha: Way of the Sword completely avoids the Soulslike genre. Instead, the game emphasizes fast, meaningful swordplay. Musashi confidently dodges enemy blows, blocks incoming attacks, and delivers brutal retaliatory strikes. Additionally, he effortlessly slashes enemies in half. The gameplay even highlights his agility, as he uses wall-running to escape deadly traps.
Throughout the journey, you will face standard demonic grunts. However, you also confront massive bosses like Shuten Doji. This giant Oni openly ridicules Musashi for rejecting demonic power.
Consequently, Musashi pushes his limits. He utilizes his gauntlet to consume both human and Oni souls. Ultimately, this allows him to transform into an incredibly powerful demonic version of himself. Yet, this overwhelming power demands a heavy toll. The story strongly teases that Musashi must surrender his life, his humanity, or something equally massive in exchange.
Release Date, Pre-Orders & A Packed September
Mark your calendars carefully. Onimusha: Way of the Sword officially launches on September 25, 2026. Pre-orders are currently live across all platforms. As an added incentive, early buyers receive a Lion Dog charm and a Sealed Curse skin for Musashi’s sword.
Meanwhile, the gaming industry prepares for a highly crowded release window. Silent Hill: Townfall launches just one day earlier on September 24. Additionally, Marvel’s Wolverine arrives in the same month. Consequently, Phantom Blade Zero smartly shifted its release to October. All these major titles want to establish their dominance before November arrives. At that point, Grand Theft Auto VI will launch and inevitably consume most gamers’ time.
