The Punjab government has announced plans to replace conventional fuel-powered buses with electric buses as part of its strategy to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable public transportation across the province.
The initiative will be implemented by the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, which aims to transition its transport operations to a modern electric mobility system designed to reduce carbon emissions and improve travel facilities for commuters.
According to official details, the authority has invited applications from interested companies and firms, with the pre-qualification process scheduled to begin on July 16, 2026.
Under the eligibility criteria, participating companies must demonstrate prior experience in supplying 12-meter fully electric buses. Applicants will also be required to provide evidence of expertise in spare parts supply, repair services, and maintenance support for electric bus fleets.
Selected firms will be responsible not only for supplying the buses but also for establishing and commissioning charging infrastructure required for the electric fleet. In addition, they will oversee driver training and operational support to ensure smooth deployment of the new transport system.
Officials stated that the project is intended to support the development of a cleaner and carbon-free public transport network while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative aligns with the environmental and transport modernization agenda of Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The transition to electric buses is expected to improve air quality, lower operating costs over the long term, and contribute to Pakistan’s broader efforts to adopt sustainable transportation solutions.
