Meta has told owners of its AI glasses they must pay for a once-free feature. Full access to Conversation Focus now sits behind a monthly subscription. Users who exceed a free limit must pay $19.99 every month.
Conversation Focus uses the microphones built into the glasses. It amplifies the voice of the person in front of you. That makes face-to-face conversations easier to hear. It can also read notifications aloud during a chat.
The feature now carries a free monthly usage cap. Owners get up to three hours of use each calendar month. After that, the free hours refresh only at the next month. Users must subscribe to continue beyond the limit.
The Facebook-parent company says the change is part of a broader subscription test. They began experimenting with premium features earlier this year. It said core services remain free while some features go paid. Already subscribers to its Meta One Premium tier get up to 15 hours monthly.
Meta framed the move as aimed at heavy users. Inside sources told media outlets that most glasses owners will not be affected. The subscription targets power users who want expanded access, it said. That tier also adds benefits like premium device support.
Not everyone welcomed the change, though. Users took to the internet to say how they feel it is wrong. It is also important to note here that Meta One subscription is also unavailable in several countries.

Other AI features stay free, according to Meta. These include live translation and the built-in voice assistant. The company has promoted Conversation Focus for its accessibility benefits. However, it stresses the feature is not a hearing aid or medical device.
Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses remain the top sellers in their category. The company recently launched cheaper models priced from $299. But the devices continue to face privacy scrutiny too.
