The Punjab government has made the Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET) mandatory for admission to Level-III postgraduate medical residency programmes, with the new requirement taking effect from the January 2027 induction cycle.
The decision was announced by the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department following recommendations made by the Post Graduate Admission Committee during its meeting on July 8, 2026.
Under the new policy, candidates seeking admission to MS, MD, MDS, and FCPS residency training programmes in Punjab must qualify for the PGET before becoming eligible for induction.
According to the official notification, the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore will conduct the entrance examination. Candidates will be required to secure a minimum qualifying percentile of 75 to pass the test.
The department clarified that while the PGET will become a compulsory eligibility requirement, admissions and merit for Level-III residency programmes will continue to be determined under the existing criteria notified by the department.
Details regarding the examination schedule, application process, syllabus, test pattern, and other operational guidelines will be announced separately by the University of Health Sciences.
The notification, issued on July 9, 2026, will apply to all postgraduate medical residency admissions beginning with the January 2027 induction.
