The Sindh government has announced a Rs. 18.206 billion initiative to distribute free solar home systems to 275,000 low-income families across the province, aiming to improve access to affordable and renewable energy.
The announcement was made during a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Friday, where he directed the Energy Department to expedite the distribution and installation of the solar systems to ensure timely completion of the project.
Under the initiative, 132,000 off-grid households located in remote, desert, mountainous, and riverine areas, along with 143,000 on-grid protected consumers using up to 100 electricity units per month, will receive the solar systems free of cost.
Each eligible household will be provided with a 180-watt solar panel, a lithium battery, one fan, and LED lights to help reduce electricity costs and improve access to reliable power.
Officials informed the meeting that 11,571 solar home systems have already been installed in several districts, including Karachi, Ghotki, Umerkot, Dadu, Tharparkar, Thatta, and Shaheed Benazirabad.
The project, which was launched in April 2025, is expected to be completed by June 2027.
The Sindh government said families registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will be given priority during distribution. Authorities also pledged to ensure a transparent allocation process and timely implementation of the initiative.
