Honda Atlas Cars has ruled out an immediate launch of battery electric vehicles in Pakistan, saying the company will instead continue prioritising hybrid technology despite already possessing the capability to manufacture EVs.
The disclosure was made during a corporate briefing session held on Tuesday, attended by Arif Habib Limited. Company management told participants that hybrid vehicles represent a more viable near-term solution for the Pakistani market compared to battery electric vehicles.
“Although the company has access to EV technology and localisation capabilities, it currently has no plans to enter the BEV segment,” AHL said in its briefing takeaways.
AHL analyst Menka Kirpalani said Honda views hybrid vehicles as more practical for Pakistan at this stage, citing the existing infrastructure and the current level of consumer readiness for full electrification. Management expects the local market to transition through a hybrid phase before eventually moving toward fully electric vehicles, she said.
Kirpalani added that despite the current strategy, Honda already possesses the technology and localisation capabilities required to manufacture EVs once demand for them increases.
The company’s position diverges from the direction set by the government, which has been promoting the production and adoption of electric vehicles in Pakistan as part of efforts to address climate change and reduce the fuel import bill. The EV sector remains in an early stage of development.
The announcement comes days after Chinese automaker BYDs Pakistan venture said its $150 million assembly plant in Gharo, Sindh, is in the final stages of completion, with the company working to bring the first locally assembled BYD vehicle to market at the earliest opportunity.
During the same briefing, HCAR management said it remains focused on rolling out hybrid technology that it considers superior to that of competitors. According to AHL, the company is currently absorbing higher costs and accepting reduced margins to support this strategic direction.
