A recent update for the Silent Hill 2 remake has introduced a frustrating new problem for PlayStation players. Patch 1.07 originally aimed to fix a minor visual issue. Instead, it completely broke Performance Mode on both the PS5 and PS5 Pro.
The “Crushed Blacks” Bug Explained
Bloober Team deployed Patch 1.07 to resolve a shimmering effect on specific surfaces for PS5 Pro users playing in Quality Mode. However, the update triggered a severe “crushed blacks” visual bug in Performance Mode.
Consequently, darker areas in the game now render too heavily. Players lose crucial environmental details entirely. Trees around the eerie town transform into solid black blobs instead of displaying branches and leaves. Furthermore, the corners of dark rooms turn into complete black voids. This glitch severely hampers the oppressive atmosphere that Silent Hill 2 is famous for.

Konami publicly confirmed the glitch three days ago on August 7. The publisher posted on X to acknowledge the recent issues affecting Performance Mode following Patch 1.07. Currently, Konami is working alongside Bloober Team to investigate the problem and deliver a permanent fix.

How to Bypass the Silent Hill 2 Remake Patch 1.07 Bug
Fortunately, PC players remain completely unaffected by this visual glitch. Meanwhile, PS5 and PS5 Pro users can easily bypass the crushed blacks. You simply need to switch your game settings to Quality Mode.
However, this workaround comes with a significant drawback. Quality Mode locks the game at 30 FPS. Many players might find this frame rate cap just as annoying as the visual bug itself.
The Silent Hill franchise recently enjoyed a massive resurgence. Bloober Team’s 2024 remake and the 2025 release of Silent Hill f revived the series after an 11-year drought. Despite this current technical headache, fans still have plenty to look forward to. Silent Hill: Townfall launches next month on September 23, transporting players to 1990s Scotland just in time for the spooky season.
