Huawei is reportedly preparing to launch a new smartphone with an unusual 16:10 display. The device follows the success of the Pura X, which introduced a similar screen shape. The new phone was initially expected to arrive between October and December. However, a new report suggests Huawei has finalized the device earlier than planned.
According to an earlier leak, the smartphone will use a Kirin 9-series chipset. It is also expected to pack a battery with at least 7,000 mAh of capacity. The camera setup could make the phone stand out as well. Huawei is reportedly using a 50MP main camera with a 1/1.3″ type sensor.
The phone is also said to feature a 50MP periscope telephoto camera. A multispectral camera will reportedly complete the rear camera setup. The device could launch as early as September, according to the latest information. That would put its release ahead of the earlier October to December window.
Huawei is not the only company exploring this unusual form factor. Oppo is reportedly developing its own smartphone with a similar 16:10 display. Oppo’s device is expected to feature a 6.3″ to 6.4″ screen. It will reportedly use a flagship chipset and include three rear cameras. A periscope telephoto camera is also expected on Oppo’s phone. However, the device is not expected until the first half of next year.
The growing interest in 16:10 smartphones suggests manufacturers are looking beyond the standard display shapes. Huawei’s upcoming model could be the next major example of this trend.
