Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing our digital landscape. However, people are now using this technology in completely unexpected ways. Recently, former Sindh minister Ghulam Rasool Unnar stepped forward with a shocking claim. He alleges that his ex-wife, Razia Arbab, used AI-edited pictures to deceive him into marriage. Consequently, he has approached a sessions court to register an FIR against her under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
A Virtual Proposal & AI-Edited Pictures
Unnar and Arbab initially connected through social media platforms. During their online conversations, she proposed marriage to him. They eventually tied the knot via a video call in the presence of witnesses. Furthermore, Unnar paid a dower of Rs100,000 for the marriage. Interestingly, his ex-wife kept her face entirely covered with a niqab throughout the virtual ceremony.
Later, Unnar finally met her in person. At that moment, he received a massive shock. He discovered that she had actively concealed her real face. Moreover, he realized she had sent him heavily filtered and AI-edited pictures before the wedding. Feeling deeply cheated and deceived, Unnar subsequently separated from her and eventually finalized a divorce.
Post-Divorce Blackmail & Fake News
Unfortunately, the divorce did not end the dispute. Unnar claims that Arbab continuously harassed him afterward. Specifically, she started posting fabricated images and fake news about his death on social media. Additionally, she allegedly demanded money and sent highly abusive messages on WhatsApp. She even threatened to kill him or release his personal videos publicly if he refused to pay her.
Therefore, Unnar asked the court to register a formal FIR. He stated that these baseless allegations, blackmail attempts, and fake news posts clearly violate PECA laws. Following his submissions, Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) Muhammad Aslam Sheikh took immediate action. He issued notices to the SSP Complaint Cell, the SHO of the Defence police station, and Arbab, directing them to submit their official responses by August 17.
On Monday, Razia Arbab officially responded to the court. She filed written objections through her legal counsel. She categorically rejected her former husband’s allegations regarding the AI-edited pictures. Instead, she informed the judge that Unnar filed this FIR application purely out of a “personal grudge”.
