Meta shifted its entire infrastructure strategy away from virtual worlds. The company now builds pervasive artificial intelligence systems using data captured through smart glasses after Mark Zuckerberg articulated this vision across more than a decade of strategic investments.
Meta’s pivot began in 2013 with advanced AI research. The company hired deep learning expert Yann LeCun to lead AI initiatives. By 2019, Meta integrated technical infrastructure across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. This unification enabled data flows across Meta’s entire platform ecosystem. Moreover, Ray-Ban smart glasses serve as primary data collection devices. These glasses capture egocentric video streams showing exactly what wearers observe. Meta uses this first-person perspective data to train AI systems. The company develops what Zuckerberg calls “low-friction contextualized AI” interfaces.
The metaverse strategy proved unsuccessful by 2022. ChatGPT and generative AI transformed technology priorities. Meta shuttered Horizon Worlds and redirected resources toward AI development. The company released LLaMA, Meta AI assistant, and Muse platforms throughout 2025 and 2026. Meta’s original metaverse vision relocated into real-world interfaces. Rather than building separate virtual worlds, Meta now makes the physical world interactive. Smart glasses capture continuous behavioral data feeding AI systems. Every photograph, video, and conversation becomes training material.
Zuckerberg’s strategy creates an algorithmic data farm. Users generate content through Meta hardware and applications; users who do not actively engage still become data points. Others photograph, record, or mention them through Meta platforms. Privacy laws impose collection limits, but vast data remains accessible. Meta trains AI systems on images users ask glasses to analyze, leading to the infamous nickname “pervert glasses” to become colloquial in internet lingo. The company collects behavioral patterns across billions of interactions, and users cannot fully opt out from nonconsensual data capture.
Wearable devices expand Meta’s data collection beyond cameras. EMG neural bands measure electrical signals from user muscles. These measure intent and emotion without explicit user communication. This biosignal data feeds AI training processes.
According to Meta:
We designed our AI glasses with privacy and safety features built in from the start – informed by engagement with safety experts, including women’s safety organizations. Our glasses have always had an LED light that activates whenever someone captures a photo or video for their gallery.
They also feature tamper detection technology, and we are updating the glasses to disable the camera if they detect the LED was physically tampered with or destroyed. No other kind of camera has done this and we’re proud to lead the industry forward.
While Meta’s safety guidelines clearly state that smart glasses shouldn’t be used for things like harassment, invading privacy, or recording sensitive information, many women have turned to social media to share their experiences of being filmed by men without their consent. So, if Meta is now planning on using the data for AI push, it is only a simple equation to wrap our brains around how people will largely react.
