Valve might launch the highly anticipated Steam Frame very soon. Recently, new backend activity suggests that reservations for Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset are almost ready to go live.
Originally, Valve announced the Steam Frame last year as its latest major push into dedicated gaming hardware. The company previously targeted a summer 2026 launch. However, the standalone VR headset still lacks an official price and an exact release date.
Despite this, the company has continuously prepared its software ecosystem. Steamworks documentation confirms that the headset runs SteamOS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Furthermore, it natively handles Arm64 software while using Proton for Windows, FEX for x86 applications, and Lepton for Android. Ultimately, Valve is positioning the device primarily around low-latency PC streaming, but it also natively supports both traditional and VR games.
A Familiar Reservation System Appears for Valve’s Steam Frame
The strongest sign of an impending launch comes from Valve dataminer Brad Lynch, known as SadlyItsBradley on Twitter. Recently, Lynch spotted a brand-new reservation system for two Steam Frame SKUs in Steam’s backend. Before this system appeared, these two hardware packages received updates after sitting unchanged for several months. Many believe these specific SKUs represent the previously confirmed 256GB and 1TB storage configurations.

In the past, Valve used similar queue systems when selling the Steam Machine and the Steam Controller. This system allowed customers to enter a queue before receiving an official purchase invitation. While this discovery does not guarantee that orders will open immediately, it strongly suggests Valve is currently finalizing its purchasing infrastructure.
September Launch & Expected Bundles
Interestingly, separate reports claim that the Steam Frame could actually begin shipping as early as next week on September 14. According to Lynch, review units already sit in testers’ hands. Consequently, his sources expect Valve to start sending headsets to customers by mid-September. However, since Valve has not officially confirmed this, fans should strictly treat September 14 as a reported target rather than a set launch date.
Other recent findings also point toward an imminent release. For instance, setup and unboxing materials have recently surfaced within the Steam Client. Additionally, Valve has already published extensive developer documentation. There are even signs of a potential ‘Half-Life: Alyx’ promotional bundle for buyers, though Valve has yet to announce it officially.
Currently, the exact price remains the biggest unanswered question. The headset aims to serve as both a standalone SteamOS gaming device and a wireless PC VR headset. Therefore, the 256GB and 1TB models give Valve room to hit different price points. With backend queues preparing and a rumored September shipment rapidly approaching, Valve will likely reveal its pricing and release plans in the coming days.
