Capcom continues its incredible winning streak this year. Recently, the company officially announced a massive milestone. Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over one million copies worldwide on launch day alone.
Consequently, the first new entry in the samurai action-adventure series in 20 years is an instant commercial hit. Furthermore, critics absolutely love the revival. OpenCritic currently gives Onimusha: Way of the Sword an 86 Top Critic Average. Additionally, the title boasts a stellar 95% recommendation score from reviewers.
Reviving a Classic Franchise With ‘Onimusha: Way of the Sword’
The ‘Onimusha’ franchise originally debuted back in 2001. Capcom subsequently released four mainline games and several spinoffs between 2001 and 2006. Back then, the PlayStation 2 hosted the series’ last full-fledged entry, ‘Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams’.
Eventually, Capcom tested the waters by releasing remasters of the first two games in 2018 and 2025. Now, the overwhelming launch of ‘Way of the Sword’ pushes the entire franchise past 10 million total lifetime sales.
Capcom clearly understands why the new game succeeded so quickly. In its official press release, the publisher credits several pre-launch marketing initiatives. Specifically, Capcom states that public demos and hands-on exhibitions successfully expanded awareness among a broad range of players. Therefore, the company confirms it is now focusing on re-activating other IPs that have not seen recent releases.
A Record-Breaking 2026 Portfolio
‘Way of the Sword’ is merely the latest victory for Capcom this year. Ahead of its annual shareholder meeting in June, the company updated its Consumer Sales Volume data.
Unsurprisingly, Resident Evil remains the publisher’s heaviest hitter. ‘Resident Evil Requiem’ launched on February 27. By June, the horror title successfully sold 6.9 million units.
Meanwhile, Capcom launched ‘Pragmata’ just two months after ‘Requiem’. This brand-new sci-fi IP immediately resonated with gamers. It sold one million units in just two days. Subsequently, Pragmata hit 2.5 million copies sold by the end of July.
Legacy Titles Maintain Momentum
Capcom also dominates through its back-catalog. Even older releases continued to generate massive revenue during Capcom’s last financial year.
Specifically, ‘Resident Evil 7’, ‘Resident Evil 2’, ‘Resident Evil Village’, ‘Resident Evil 3’, and ‘Resident Evil 4’ each sold over 2 million copies. Similarly, ‘Devil May Cry 5’ also achieved over 2 million sales during that exact same financial period.
