Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has officially unveiled its flagship heavy-duty electric truck, the ETT 44, marking a major milestone for long-haul freight electrification. Debuting at the IAA Transportation event, the commercial e-HGV aims directly at Europe’s established diesel giants by offering competitive specs and groundbreaking charging capabilities.
At the heart of the ETT 44 is a massive 651 kWh Blade Battery pack, which delivers an impressive driving range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. However, the most striking feature of the new flagship semi is its support for ultra-fast energy replenishment. Connected to BYD’s proprietary 1.5 MW Megawatt Charging System, the heavy truck can take in more than 1.5 megawatts of power, allowing it to refill its battery from 20% to 80% in just approximately 20 minutes.
This rapid turnaround time addresses one of the primary logistical hurdles facing commercial fleet operators worldwide: prolonged vehicle downtime. By cutting charging windows down to times comparable to traditional diesel refueling stops, BYD hopes to accelerate the transition away from fossil-fuel-powered freight transit. The infrastructure relies on specialized high-capacity flash charging networks designed specifically for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
In addition to its fast-charging prowess, the ETT 44 integrates BYD’s advanced electric drive platforms and centralized vehicle controls to maximize energy efficiency. The robust powertrain configurations and high-capacity energy storage solutions reflect the company’s broader strategy to scale up clean commercial transport solutions across global markets.
“We have already put FLASH Charging into practice in passenger vehicles. Today, we are bringing this technology to commercial vehicles, starting with our trucks. With 1.5 Megawatts of charging power, it can charge from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes – delivering up to 248 miles of range. Less time charging. More time on the road,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD.
As regulatory bodies in Europe and beyond push for stricter carbon emission reductions in heavy transport, vehicle offerings like the ETT 44 provide a viable zero-emission alternative for logistics operators. While rolling out the necessary megawatt-scale charging infrastructure remains a complex infrastructural challenge, BYD’s latest hardware debut demonstrates that ultra-fast commercial EV charging is rapidly shifting from concept to commercial reality.
