Microsoft announced its biggest Copilot update on September 25 (September 25, 2026, 1:16pm Pakistan Standard Time [UTC+5]). CEO Satya Nadella called Copilot “a new OS for work” spanning every model and task. The update moves agent runtime into the enterprise infrastructure layer. Critically, it builds persistent identity, state, execution boundaries, and organizational context directly into Microsoft 365.
This shift means developers no longer assemble infrastructure around a model independently. Autopilot agents now receive their own Entra identity and user account. Each agent gains email, calendar, OneDrive storage, and Teams access. Agents appear on the organizational chart as themselves rather than acting through shared service accounts or borrowed user credentials.
Microsoft structured the update around four core components. Home merges Chat and Cowork in the Copilot app. Code generates apps, dashboards, and workflows from natural language descriptions. Autopilot turns agents into persistent background workers that continue functioning without requiring new prompts per task. The company is rolling Home and Code first through its Frontier early-access program. Autopilot enters private preview by month’s end.
Code-generated apps run on Copilot Managed Runtime in public preview. This platform hosts applications inside customers’ Microsoft 365 tenant boundaries under IT governance. Apps execute within existing identity and governance frameworks while Microsoft manages the underlying runtime. Developers can deploy new versions without taking current releases offline. Lovable, an app-building platform, immediately joined the initiative, enabling apps built on Lovable to run inside Microsoft tenants the same way other software does.
The economics shift significantly for long-running agents. Standard Copilot subscriptions cover the assistant. However, Cowork, Code, Autopilot, and frontier models incur usage-based charges through Copilot Credits. This change forces teams to govern agent compute alongside what each agent can access. Microsoft is extending cost management in Agent 365 to cover Code and Copilot Managed Runtime operations.
However, convenience carries trade-offs. The more agents depend on Microsoft 365 for identity, permissions, and context, the harder they become to move elsewhere. Agents lock into Microsoft’s infrastructure more deeply. Model portability remains because Microsoft runs Copilot on models from both OpenAI and Anthropic. The Agent 365 SDK adds governed Model Context Protocol access. Yet the underlying identity and permission layers remain tightly integrated with Microsoft 365.
