Meet Doctrine: The Vampiric Support Hero
Season 5 brings a fresh face to the roster. Doctrine is a unique support character equipped with vampiric abilities. He steals health from enemies to heal himself and his teammates. Additionally, he wields a powerful scepter that damages foes while healing allies. This effect grows even stronger when he triggers his ‘Infuse’ ability.
However, Blizzard closely monitored Doctrine during his limited trial weekend. As a result, developers tweaked his kit just before launch. They increased his Ultimate cost by 8%. They also reduced his Invigorating Drones attack speed down to 30%.
Overwatch Season 5 Update Brings Sombra & Roadhog Reworks
Without a doubt, the hero reworks steal the spotlight. Sombra officially leaves the Recon Damage role behind. She now operates as Tactical Support. Consequently, developers completely removed her Hack ability. Instead, Sombra utilizes a new “Cyberspace” ability to debuff enemies. This inflicts a “Weaken” status, which instantly halves enemy damage and healing output. Moreover, her new “Hotfix” ability heals allies and still lets her hack health packs and deployables.
Meanwhile, Roadhog remains a tank, but his playstyle requires a new approach. He receives a fresh ability called “Trash Compactor”. This move replaces his Scrap Gun’s alternative fire. When activated, Roadhog absorbs incoming projectiles for two seconds. Then, he fires a massive explosive blast. The blast damage perfectly scales based on the absorbed hits. Furthermore, his Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley. To compensate, developers increased his ammo from 6 to 12, but slightly lowered his critical damage multiplier, pellet count, and pellet damage.
Hit Volumes, Unvaulted Passes & Graveyard Games
Beyond individual reworks, Blizzard applied a massive balancing pass across the entire roster. Developers adjusted hit volume sizes for heads, torsos, arms, and legs. Ultimately, this change makes hero hitboxes much more consistent. Other notable hero tweaks include increasing Genji’s Swift Strike damage to 60 and extending Lúcio’s Sound Barrier duration to 6 seconds.
Furthermore, the update revamps the progression system. You can now level up Unvaulted Battle Passes from past seasons alongside the current one. Competitive Play also sees a major shift. The Top 500 Challenger System now prioritizes Rank over Challenger Score to reward highly skilled players.
Additionally, developers upgraded the core game experience. They added Projectile Speed and Size stats to the Advanced Info Panel. They also cleaned up the Ping System chat text and restored the 3-Tank maximum in Mystery Heroes. Over in the Stadium mode, Quick Play transitions into an Open Queue format with strict role limits, and passive health drops by 50%.
Finally, the annual Halloween Terror event is taking a break. Instead, players can dive into “Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games” over the next four weeks. This 5v5 mode guarantees a 1-2-2 role composition but assigns players a random role. Interestingly, you gain a random new power every time you die. You can also unlock spooky Season 5 skins, including Ghostly Belle Ashe, Ghost Bride Mei, and Jack O’ Ripper Soldier: 76.
