Brands with an active social media presence gain a clear advantage in AI-powered search results. A new SE Ranking study confirms this after analyzing 100,000 keywords across multiple brand niches.
The numbers tell a striking story. Social platform links appear in 67.66% of Google AI Overview responses. They also show up in 32.39% of Google AI Mode replies. ChatGPT, however, references social media far less frequently, at just 8.4% of its answers.

YouTube stands out as the most commonly cited social source in Google AI Overviews. Meanwhile, Reddit and LinkedIn lead among ChatGPT citations, though both platforms appear in fewer than 1% of total responses. In Google’s AI Mode specifically, Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit receive the most references.
The study also examined branded versus non-branded queries in AI Mode. Social media sources appeared in 39.34% of branded query responses. For non-branded queries, that figure rose even higher to 48.58%. As a result, brands without a social presence may lose significant visibility in AI-generated answers.
However, the landscape remains volatile. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations reportedly fell 86.4% in just four days during August 2026. Search Engine Land first reported that drop, and experts still cannot fully explain the timing. Yet Reddit citations remain steady in Google’s AI responses. Analysts attribute this stability to Google’s existing data-sharing deal with Reddit.
These findings suggest that AI search optimization now requires a platform-specific strategy. Each AI tool pulls from different sources and weights them differently. Because of this, brands cannot rely on a single social channel for consistent AI visibility.

The broader trend is clear. As AI increasingly mediates how consumers discover brands, social media activity has become a direct ranking signal. Companies that maintain regular, quality content across platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn position themselves for stronger AI search performance. This shift makes social media strategy more important than ever for digital marketing teams.
