Gamers can finally mark their calendars. Nintendo and Mojang will launch Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Currently, digital pre-orders are live on the Nintendo eShop for $29.99. The game retains its E10+ ESRB rating for fantasy violence and in-game purchases. Therefore, players will experience a very familiar core game. However, Nintendo is offering a tempting deal for returning players.
Pre-orders for @Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2 are available now! If you already own a digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch, get a digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 for free in most territories by Jan 31.

How the Free Minecraft Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Works
Nintendo and Mojang are providing a free digital upgrade to the Switch 2 Standard Edition. However, this offer includes some strict conditions. First, you must already own a digital version of Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch. Consequently, physical cartridge owners do not currently have a confirmed upgrade path.
Second, this upgrade window is limited. Qualifying users can claim their free Switch 2 port starting October 27, 2026, but the offer expires completely on January 31, 2027. Furthermore, eligible digital owners also receive discounted pre-order rates on the Deluxe and Ultimate Collections.
Finally, a few regional exceptions apply. While the upgrade is free in most territories, players in Japan and Taiwan must pay a small upgrade fee of 100 yen and 30 NTD, respectively.
Visual Upgrades & Seamless Transfers
Transitioning to the new console will be smooth. All your Minecraft save data from the original Switch edition will automatically carry over to the Switch 2 port. Additionally, every version of the Switch 2 game includes the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.
Visually, the developers are stepping things up. The new port introduces a “Vibrant Visuals” graphical setting. This feature adds realistic lighting and shadow effects to your game world. However, you cannot use Vibrant Visuals in split-screen mode. Likewise, specific Marketplace Worlds will also disable this high-end lighting feature.
New Biomes & Dimensions on the Horizon
Meanwhile, Mojang is aggressively expanding the Minecraft universe. The developers recently teased the next content Drop, which will feature a massive underground Ice Cave biome. This freezing environment introduces the new “frozen zombie” enemy variant. These new mobs act as a ranged threat because they throw snowballs at unsuspecting players. Currently, this content Drop does not have an official release date.
Moreover, players can expect a brand-new dimension called “The Sift” arriving sometime in 2027. Currently, players can already explore The Sift in ‘Minecraft Dungeons 2’. As a result, interested fans can jump into the dungeon crawler right now to see exactly what will arrive in Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock Editions next year.
