The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns from October 15 to October 31, 2026, following demands from taxpayers and different forums.
So far, the FBR has received 6.9 million returns, along with tax payments of Rs72 billion. In the same period last fiscal year, it received 5.2 million returns, though the amount of tax paid then was lower.
Retailers, however, have shown little response to the Aasan Tax Scheme. Only 1,571 returns have been filed under the fixed tax scheme, with payments of around Rs140 million.
The FBR has already identified the areas and markets in major cities where retailers are expected to join the scheme. After the October 31 deadline expires, the government plans to launch a nationwide crackdown.
Separately, the FBR has amended the Income Tax Rules, 2002. The amended rule applies to all disputes brought or specified for resolution under section 134A through the Alternate Dispute Resolution Committee mechanism.
