Meta added several new features to its Edits video editing app this week. The company also introduced reference reels on Instagram and confirmed it will remove reel linking later this month.
The biggest Edits update lets creators attach links to specific songs and sounds in their reels. Viewers can then tap the link to hear the audio directly.

Additionally, the app now shows trending topics so creators can see what drives engagement with their audience. However, this feature currently works only for accounts with more than 10,000 followers.
Meta also added “Kits” to Edits. This feature lets creators save visual style elements into a dedicated group. They can then reuse that style across future reels. The app also gained more visual effects tools as part of this update.
Meanwhile, Instagram introduced reference reels on iOS. This feature lets creators use another reel as an on-screen guide while recording a new one. To use it, creators open a reel under 90 seconds, tap the three-dot menu, and select “Use as reference.” The reference then plays in a small, movable window inside the camera view. Creators can also pause and rewatch it as often as they need. A countdown timer further helps them sync their clip with the original.

On the other hand, Instagram will remove reel linking on October 28. The platform first launched reel linking in August 2025 to let creators connect reels into a series. Creator economy expert Lia Haberman first reported the removal. As a result, creators who built series through linked reels will need to find other ways to connect their content.
These updates reflect Meta’s ongoing push to make Edits the go-to editing app for reels creators. The app competes directly with CapCut, Adobe Premiere, and DaVinci Resolve. Since its launch, Meta has steadily added features like weekly content ideas, storyboard tools, and now audio links to close the gap.
