Canada has announced changes to its Express Entry immigration system, introducing additional points for skilled workers with eligible Canadian work experience or job offers in high-wage occupations. The revised rules will take effect on November 3, 2026, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Under the updated Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), candidates with at least one year of eligible Canadian work experience in a high-wage occupation may receive an additional 20, 40, or 70 points, depending on their wage level. Applicants with qualifying job offers can also earn 50, 70, or 100 points based on the offered salary. Candidates qualifying under both categories will receive points from whichever option offers the higher score, as the benefits cannot be combined.
The revised system will also remove certain Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) requirements for eligible job offers. IRCC will instead assess offers directly to verify employers’ legitimacy, their ability to meet employment terms, and compliance with labour laws. Applicants must have the required qualifications, while revoked job offers will not qualify for additional points.
IRCC has advised eligible candidates to review and update their Express Entry profiles before November 3. However, the department clarified that additional CRS points do not guarantee an invitation to apply for permanent residence, as invitations will continue to depend on eligibility requirements and CRS cutoff scores.
