AMD and OpenAI have signed a multi-year partnership to expand global AI infrastructure at an unprecedented scale. Under the deal, OpenAI will deploy over 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, marking one of the largest AI compute agreements to date. According to AMD, OpenAI will begin using its new Instinct MI450 series GPUs in the second half of 2026.

The announcement follows just weeks after OpenAI revealed a separate strategic partnership with Nvidia. That deal involved a $100 billion investment and the deployment of 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems.
“This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential. AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO.
As part of this latest agreement, AMD becomes OpenAI’s core strategic compute partner, strengthening collaboration between both companies. The two firms will also develop critical infrastructure to handle the rising global demand for AI applications.
According to the source, OpenAI will receive more than 160 million AMD shares once specific performance milestones are achieved, aligning both companies’ long-term growth goals.
This deal marks a significant moment in the AI hardware race, as AMD positions itself to compete more directly with Nvidia in powering next-generation AI systems.
