Apple in Talks to Assemble and Package iPhone Chips in India
Apple may soon start assembling and packaging its iPhone chips in India, signaling a major step in local production. The tech giant is reportedly exploring partnerships with Indian chip manufacturers to expand its supply chain.
According to reports, Apple has held initial talks with CG Semi, which is currently constructing an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Gujarat. The discussions suggest the facility could initially focus on display-related chips, a critical component for iPhones.
If the partnership moves forward, CG Semi would need to meet Apple’s strict quality and reliability standards. Sources also indicate Apple is in discussions with other local firms to broaden its options.
Currently, Apple sources its display driver integrated circuits (DDICs) from companies like Samsung, Himax, LX Semicon, and Novatek. These suppliers operate facilities in South Korea, Taiwan, and China, making India a potential new hub for chip assembly. This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to diversify manufacturing outside China, reducing supply chain risks while tapping into India’s growing semiconductor industry.
