Next generation Apple Watches will have solid state buttons

Apple is reportedly working to make a Watch with solid state buttons that will sense the touch of a finger.

According to Fast Company, next-generation Apple Watch will ditch physical buttons for solid-state buttons that will not move up and down but will react to a users touch. The new buttons will vibrate slightly under the fingertip, using the haptic effect called Taptic Engine. The source said that the company will keep the configuration of buttons same with a button and a digital crown situated on one side of the device.

Solid state buttons will make the Watch water resistant as the openings needed for physical buttons will be eliminated. The buttons will also occupy less space, leaving a room for the bigger battery. In 2016’s iPhone 7, Apple replaced the iPhone’s home button with a solid state design. In past years, other Apple components such as MacBook trackpads and iPod control wheels have also switched from moving parts to the solid-state technology.

The new buttons might form part of the new Apple Watch that is scheduled to hit the stores this fall or it could be included in the 2019’s watch, the source said.

Apple has been introducing quite interesting and exciting features for its Watch since the start of 2018. Last week, we reported that Apple previewed a new walkie-talkie feature for its smartwatch aimed to help people stay healthy and connected. Walkie-Talkie is an entirely new way to communicate with voice by just tapping of the wrist. Similarly, Apple is adding a new Application Programming Interface (API) to its ResearchKit framework that will enable Apple Watch to monitor the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
