Apple will be using its own graphics chip in the upcoming iterations of its products in a matter of almost 2 years. The company has sent a notification to Imagination Technologies Group (ITG), the organization which had been powering the GPU in Apple iPhones, Tablets, iPods, TVs and other devices for many years.
According to the notification sent to ITG, Apple will stop using the Group’s intellectual property in a matter of 15 months to 2 years. The notice further says that Apple is working on an independent graphics design for its product which will lead to less dependency on ITG technology. If the statement is to be believed then we can hope to see Apple’s own GPU in the new iterations of their product array.
The statement further says,
“Apple has asserted that it has been working on a separate, independent graphics design in order to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination’s technology.
Apple has not presented any evidence to substantiate its assertion that it will no longer require Imagination’s technology, without violating Imagination’s patents, intellectual property and confidential information. This evidence has been requested by Imagination but Apple has declined to provide it.”
The update from Apple will be a big blow for ITG as a major portion of its revenue was coming from royalty and license agreement on different Apple products. It should be noted here that Apple owns 8% of ITG and there have been talks around acquisition of this group but Apple decided against that and, reportedly, it is now moving ahead with developing its own mechanism for Graphics Processor Units.
