ARC Raiders Update Teased: ‘Kettle’ & ‘Trigger Nades’ To be Nerfed

ARC Raiders continues its dominance in the shooter genre. Since its launch in late October, the game has sold over 12 million copies. It currently rivals giants like Battlefield and Call of Duty on Steam. However, popularity often highlights exploits. Consequently, Embark Studios is stepping in. Design Lead Virgil Watkins confirmed that significant balance changes arrive in tomorrow’s update, January 13.

ARC Raiders: Nerfing the ‘Kettle’ & ‘Trigger Nades’

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Watkins outlined specific changes for the Kettle rifle and Trigger Nades. The developers identified a critical issue with the “Kettle”. Players currently exploit the weapon’s high fire rate cap to “insta-kill” opponents. Therefore, the January 13 patch will lower this fire rate cap to ensure fair play.

Simultaneously, “Trigger Nades” are receiving a mechanics overhaul. Embark Studios wants players to rely on accuracy rather than spam tactics. The update adjusts the damage falloff curve, requiring precise throws for maximum effect. Additionally, the developers are tweaking the “lead time”. Grenades will no longer detonate immediately upon impact. Watkins also noted that the team might adjust where these weapons sit on the rarity spectrum in future updates.

A History of Rapid Updates & Awards

Embark Studios has maintained an aggressive update schedule. Excluding a holiday break, they have released patches weekly. The recent 1.7.3 update launched just two days ago, on January 10. Furthermore, the “Cold Snap” update in December introduced dynamic winter weather that masks footsteps and reduces visibility.

This support strategy is working. ARC Raiders secured “Best Multiplayer Game” at the 2025 Game Awards and “Most Innovative Gameplay” at the Steam Awards. Currently, the title is longlisted for six British Academy Games Awards, which take place in April.

Future Expansions & Industry Buzz

The game’s rapid rise has attracted attention beyond the gaming industry. CEO Patrick Söderlund confirmed that multiple studios have expressed interest in adapting ARC Raiders for film or TV.

However, the game is not without its critics. Fans have voiced concerns regarding the use of generative AI for art assets and voice acting. Despite this controversy, the game’s commercial momentum remains unchecked. With the balance patch dropping tomorrow, players should expect a shift in the current meta.
