The Senate Standing Committee on Defence conducted a thorough inspection of Islamabad International Airport today to review passenger facilities, security measures, and overall operational readiness.

The visit was led by Senator Talha Mehmood, Chairman of the Committee, with Senator Molana Atta ul Haq also present. This exercise is part of the Committee’s ongoing efforts to ensure that Pakistan’s primary international gateway meets national and international aviation standards.

Officials from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the Airport Manager, and the Airport Security Force (ASF) briefed the Committee during the visit. They highlighted that the airport has the capacity to handle nine million passengers and up to 100,000 tons of cargo annually.

Passenger complaints mostly relate to cleanliness, prayer areas, washrooms, and minor leakages. Authorities outlined steps being taken to address these concerns. The Committee also reviewed runway conditions and other operational safety measures.

The terminal is equipped with 5,343 seats, 3,250 baggage trolleys, nine prayer areas, 370 toilet units, 17 baby changing rooms, two children’s play areas, and six charging points. Passenger movement is supported by golf carts, passenger bridges, and optimized baggage handling facilities. A dedicated lounge for Chinese passengers has also been set up to facilitate diplomatic and business travel.

Security was a key focus of the inspection. ASF officials reported recoveries worth Rs. 10 million in January, along with seizures totaling Rs. 655 billion, 18 kilograms of gold recovered, and 1,370 arms confiscated. A major upgrade, including 3,000 AI-integrated surveillance cameras, is underway to strengthen airport security.

The Committee was briefed on ongoing and upcoming projects, including a general aviation area, MRO facilities, the Rainwater Harvesting Kasana Dam, rehabilitation of VIP lounges, replacement of terminal roofing, and the introduction of electric vehicles for airside operations.

Senator Talha Mehmood stressed restoring non-operational routes, including flights to Gilgit and Dera Ismail Khan, at least once a week. He also called for priority handling of Hajj flights and pilgrims, emphasizing that the Committee will continue monitoring airport operations to protect public interest and improve efficiency.
