The Canadian government has expanded its online passport renewal service to all eligible adult citizens residing in Canada, allowing more people to complete the renewal process digitally without visiting government offices.
The announcement was made on July 28 in Vancouver by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Lena Metlege Diab, who said the expansion aims to make passport services more convenient and accessible.
Under the expanded system, eligible applicants can complete the entire renewal process online by submitting their application, passport photograph, and payment electronically. Citizens will no longer be required to mail documents or visit a Service Canada Centre unless they choose to do so or need in-person assistance.
The government said the digital service will particularly benefit people living in rural and remote areas, as well as individuals who face mobility challenges and find in-person visits difficult.
Previously, online passport renewal was available only to a limited number of applicants. With the removal of those restrictions, a larger number of eligible Canadian adults can now use the digital renewal platform.
Traditional passport renewal options, including mail-in applications and in-person services, will continue to remain available for citizens who prefer those methods.
The expansion is part of Canada’s broader initiative to modernize government services by introducing more secure, efficient, and user-friendly digital solutions.
The move follows several recent improvements to passport services, including the launch of an online passport application status tracker and expanded access to 10-business-day passport services at selected Service Canada Centres.
The Canadian government has also maintained its passport service guarantee, under which eligible applications must be processed within 30 business days. If the deadline is not met, applicants may receive their passport free of charge.
