Chinese Audi Electric Version Launched at Auto Shanghai 2025

A new chapter in Audi’s journey in China begins with the Volkswagen Group officially unveiling its new electric vehicle brand, AUDI, exclusively for the Chinese market. Audi presented its first production model, the E5 Sportback, at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show. This mid-size fastback is fully electric and was specifically designed for Chinese consumers.

The Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP) has produced its first product, the AUDI E5 Sportback.  Audi Germany and its Chinese development partner, SAIC, collaborated to create this next-generation architecture.

The automobile exhibits a redesigned structure with an aerodynamic appearance that sets it apart from classic Audi models. Such distinction is achieved through the design of the circular wheels, the slender headlamps, and the minimal front section, which project both contemporary essence and personalistic style.

Performance and Powertrain Options

The E5 Sportback, which prioritizes performance versatility, will be available in four power configurations:

  • 220 kw (295 hp)
  • 300 kw (402 hp)
  • 425 kw (570 hp)
  • 579 kw (776 hp)

Rear-wheel drive and the quattro all-wheel drive system are available in all configuration options at Audi. The top-performing model achieves a 100 km/h run in 3.4 seconds, according to company statistics.

Battery, Charging, and Range

In all E-Tron GT versions, the 100 kWh battery pack is operated with an 800v charging architecture. The E5 Sportback is equipped with 800v ultra-fast charging, which allows for a charge of 370 km in just 10 minutes.

The Audi E-Tron suggests a maximum travel distance of 770 kilometers when operating on a full charge. However, this is contingent upon the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) measurements, which yield results that differ from those of other global testing

Design and Interior Innovation

Measuring 4,881 mm in length, 1,959 mm in width, and 1,478 mm in height, the E5 Sportback blends premium design with functionality. MDC’s interior space is equipped with a 27-inch 4K panoramic display that is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor.

The dashboard display, which spans the entire dashboard, connects the digital mirrors and the context-sensitive control bar located on the center console.  The new platform on which AUDI OS operates offers a high-speed connection, automatic software installations, and a Chinese-focused application marketplace.

The A6 L E-Tron Deluxe is equipped with adaptive air suspension, all-wheel steering, and wireless charging. It also includes built-in speakers on the headrests, automatic control of the panoramic glass roof, and an automated dimming feature.

The luxury experience is maximally enhanced by ambient illumination, three-dimensional wood elements, and sophisticated lighting, in addition to sophisticated fragrance distribution systems.

AI and Driver Assistance Technology

The E5 Sportback features an AI-powered assistant, which interacts via voice and touch, offering a personalized user experience with customizable personality traits and behavior. This assistant is part of an advanced driver assistance suite known as AUDI 360 Assisted Driving, which includes:

  • A 100-line LiDAR system
  • 29 perception units including cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors
  • Adaptive Cruise Assist for urban and highway driving
  • Active Safety System calibrated for Chinese road conditions, including pedestrian and small vehicle detection
  • Cross-floor memory parking for complex parking environments

Audi has not publicly disclosed its position under SAE type definitions (Level 2 or Level 3), although the vehicle achieves high levels of driver assistance.

The introduction of the AUDI brand in uppercase format without the well-known rings symbolizes Volkswagen Group’s strategic market adaptation.  Success in the swiftly evolving Chinese electric vehicle market is significantly influenced by the design sensibility and local digital integration initiatives.

“This is the best of both worlds,” said Fermín Soneira, CEO of the Audi and SAIC Cooperation Project. “The E5 combines Audi’s engineering heritage with digital innovation inspired by China’s tech-forward consumers.”

Looking ahead, the new AUDI brand plans to introduce two additional electric models in 2026 and 2027, continuing Audi’s largest product expansion in its history.
