Chromecast Down Google Apologizes And Assures Fix Is Coming

Several users of older Chromecast devices recently encountered a frustrating issue where their units stopped casting content. With Google having retired the Chromecast brand last year, many users initially feared this was an intentional discontinuation of support. However, the company has now confirmed that the issue is software-related and that its engineers are actively working on a resolution.

In an email sent to affected users, Google acknowledged the disruption, stating, “We apologize for the issue and understand your frustration. We are working to roll out a fix as soon as possible and will share updates and guidance on the Nest Community page. We appreciate your patience as we resolve this issue.”

The problem seems to primarily impact the 2nd-generation Chromecast from 2015 and Chromecast Audio, causing them to display an “Untrusted device” error whenever users attempt to cast. The only available option is to dismiss the message, which effectively disables casting functionality.

A Google Nest Community Manager confirmed that the company has “identified the cause of the issue” and is actively developing a fix. While Google has not officially disclosed the root cause, a Reddit user suggested that the failure was “most definitely due to the certificate baked into the Chromecast having expired.”

In response to user concerns, Google has urged affected individuals not to perform a factory reset on their Chromecast devices, as doing so will render them completely unusable. This advice suggests that Google may be working on a remote solution rather than requiring manual intervention from users.

Although no official timeline for a fix has been provided, Google’s acknowledgment and apology signal that a resolution is in progress. Users experiencing this issue are advised to stay updated through Google’s Nest Community page for further announcements.
