Date Confirmed For Islamabad’s First Ever Car Free Pedestrian Food Street
Islamabad is set to welcome its first ever pedestrian only food street by December 31, 2025, as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) speeds up construction work on Jinnah Avenue’s newly designated walk-only zone. The project aims to reshape the Blue Area into a safer, more vibrant and pedestrian friendly public space.
The initiative is part of CDA’s broader plan to modernize Islamabad’s core commercial district. Inspired by Istanbul’s Istiklal Street and Lahore’s Nizami Street, the 800 foot stretch will feature architect designed kiosks and a vehicle-free environment to enhance the city’s urban culture and tourism appeal.
CDA officials confirmed that construction is running in multiple shifts to meet the year end deadline. The upcoming food street will host 18 to 20 kiosks, each offering a variety of local food options.
An official involved in the project said,
“This transformation will reduce congestion, improve safety and create a unique urban experience for residents and visitors.”
To manage rising traffic concerns, the CDA has also completed a 1,000-vehicle parking plaza, with more parking spots being identified across the Blue Area. The authority is coordinating closely with traders to minimize disruption during development and after launch.
In a key clarification, CDA announced it will not directly auction the stalls. Instead, a third-party operator will be hired to manage the food street, handle vendor auctions and ensure high quality services for visitors. An advertisement to select the operator will be issued soon.
Officials say the project is expected to significantly improve tourism, boost commercial activity and contribute to a more walkable, modern capital city.
