Social media users are sounding the alarm. A wave of warnings to “delete Facebook” has swept across the internet this week. This backlash comes as Meta prepares to roll out a controversial new feature next month.
The tech giant is making significant changes to its privacy policy. These changes officially go into effect on December 16. Consequently, many users fear for the privacy of their personal conversations.
The core of the controversy lies in data monitoring. With this update, Meta will monitor interactions you have with its AI chatbot across all its platforms. According to Meta, they will use this data to “personalise content and ads recommendations”, including posts and Reels.
However, the internet is sceptical. The announcement immediately sparked a stir on social media. Reddit users, in particular, voiced strong concerns. One user posted a viral warning stating that Meta will read DMs, pictures, and AI chats starting in December 2025.

This sparked further outrage. Another user commented sarcastically that Meta is merely admitting to practices they have done for years to avoid lawsuits. Others expressed frustration over a perceived lack of privacy protection, specifically fearing that “encrypted” WhatsApp chats are no longer safe.
Despite the online panic, the company insists they will not snoop on your private conversations with other people. The company clarified exactly what the policy update means for users.
Meta states that they will soon use your interactions with AI at Meta to personalise the content and ads you see. Therefore, the data collection applies specifically to chats with their AI, not your friends or family.
Furthermore, Meta addressed fears regarding microphone spying. The company asserted that they do not use your microphone unless you give permission and are actively using a specific voice feature. If you use your voice, an indicator light will confirm the microphone is in use.
To further reassure users, Meta highlighted strict boundaries regarding ad targeting. The company promised not to use AI conversations about sensitive topics to generate ads. These excluded topics include:
Users who remain concerned can take action. Meta notes that tools like “Ads Preferences” allow you to adjust the content and ads you see at any time.
