Destiny 2 has seen no official updates in over two months, but the community refuses to let the game die. Recently, reports highlighted a massive breakthrough from the community. A fan-made mod called Project Sunrise is actively pulling playable Destiny 2 missions out of Bungie’s infamous content vault.
After the unceremonious death of Destiny 2, players lost a highly valued gaming space. Titles like Warframe and The Division 2 offer similar features, but they cannot fill the exact vacuum left behind. Now, dedicated fans are taking matters into their own hands.
Destiny 2 ‘Project Sunrise’ Brings Back The Vault
Bungie originally implemented the content vault to reduce game file sizes. The studio wanted to streamline constant updates. Consequently, they locked away most of the vanilla Destiny 2 experience. This specific move alienated both new and returning players by removing the game’s clear introduction.
Project Sunrise is a completely free mod designed to bypass those restrictions. Initially, the mod only allowed players to freely explore vaulted locations. Soon, the developers plan to significantly expand its scope. Future updates will add loadout customization, new weapon acquisition, and fully playable missions from past campaigns. Specifically, developers aim to revive the complete Red War campaign and quests from the Curse of Osiris DLC.
Leviathan Raid & In-Game Triumphs
The mod is evolving rapidly. Developers recently made major progress with in-game Triumphs. Players can currently unlock these Triumphs and earn actual rewards. Furthermore, the classic Leviathan Raid is now accessible. With playable missions on the horizon, the raid encounters might become fully functional in the future.
However, players must manage their expectations. The developers note that Project Sunrise will likely remain a strictly solo-only experience. Fans should not expect multiplayer functionality, even if they can finally revisit raid encounters removed by the content vault.
Bungie’s Crisis & a 410,000-Strong Petition
Despite its current state, Destiny 2 still holds a strong player base. Over 30,000 concurrent players log in via Steam alone. This number is roughly 10 times higher than the player count for Marathon, Bungie’s only other active game.
The community’s demand for the franchise remains massive. An official fan petition demanding Destiny 3 recently surpassed 400,000 signatures and currently sits at nearly 410,000. Fans clearly want more Destiny. Consequently, the overwhelming support for Project Sunrise leaves a looming question. The community now waits to see if Bungie and Sony will allow the project to survive, or if they will attempt to take the mod down.
