The government is moving forward with a nationwide digital fuel management system that will change how people buy petrol. This system will introduce a fuel quota for private vehicles, ensuring that purchases stay within assigned limits. According to officials, the initiative is designed to improve control, transparency, and efficiency in fuel distribution across the country. At petrol stations, citizens will soon rely on mobile-based verification before buying fuel. This shift connects government policy with digital tools, aiming to modernize how fuel is tracked and managed.
To support this system, mobile phones will be installed at petrol pumps across the country. The Ministry of IT has already completed testing of these devices. In addition, the National IT Board (NITB) has approved the smartphones that oil marketing companies will use. The system will rely on approved handsets only, as both NITB and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have set clear standards for device usage.
Officials confirmed that the mobile application designed for fuel management has also passed its testing phase. The Ministry of IT has shared full project details with the Cabinet Division. Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has been asked to direct oil marketing companies to begin purchasing the devices. This step will help ensure a smooth rollout at fuel stations nationwide.
The government has set the price of each mobile device at around 36,000 rupees. These devices, identified as the Xiaomi Redmi 15C, will be used at petrol pumps under the system. Oil marketing companies will pay for the phones, while NITB will handle the purchase process. After the payment is completed, OGRA will distribute the devices to the companies, which will then supply them to fuel stations.
Before finalizing the rollout, NITB verified the quality and performance of the selected mobile phones. It also invited companies to express interest in supplying the devices. After reviewing proposals and holding discussions, the final price was agreed upon. This process ensured that the selected device meets both technical and operational requirements.
Under the new plan, the federal government will announce fuel quotas for vehicles nationwide. A mobile application, developed by the Pakistan Digital Authority, will enforce these limits. As a result, individuals will not be able to purchase fuel beyond their assigned quota. This system aims to create a more controlled and transparent fuel distribution network nationwide.
