Facebook now lets users control their feed algorithm by simply typing what they want to see. The new feature builds on Facebook’s existing “Your Algorithm” controls and adds a chatbot-style prompt where users can state their preferences in plain English.
Meta says the system uses large language models that understand “the interests, context, and intent behind natural language.” As a result, users no longer need to hunt through menus or tap individual topic buttons. They can just type something like “show me more cooking videos” or “less political content,” and the algorithm adjusts immediately. Facebook says recommendations update within the same session.
The feature works in both the main feed and Reels. Users can also add or remove specific topics from the interest list the system has already built for them. Additionally, when users tap “Interested” or “Not interested” on a post, Facebook may now ask follow-up questions to better understand their preferences. This follow-up feature is currently rolling out to users.
This update follows a pattern Meta started on Threads earlier this year. In February 2026, Threads launched a “Dear Algo” feature that let users post a message starting with those words to reshape their feed for three days. Users could even repost other people’s “Dear Algo” prompts to apply those preferences to their own feeds. The Facebook version goes further by making changes persistent rather than temporary.
The plain language controls also arrive alongside a much bigger shift in how Meta uses AI conversations. Since December 2025, Meta has used voice and text conversations with its AI assistant to personalize recommendations across Facebook and Instagram. If a user chats with Meta AI about hiking, for example, they may start seeing outdoor groups, trail Reels, and camping gear ads. Meta says it excludes sensitive topics like religion, health, politics, and sexual orientation from ad targeting.
However, users cannot fully opt out of this data use while still using Meta AI. The only available control lets users adjust how much the data personalizes their experience. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about the approach, especially since Meta’s ad revenue hit $46 billion in a single quarter. Regions with stronger privacy laws, including the EU and UK, will get a delayed rollout of the AI-powered ad personalization.
The algorithm changes also come with existing controls that many users overlook. Facebook already lets users add up to 30 Favorites whose posts appear near the top, switch to a reverse chronological feed through the Feed Filter Bar, and use “Show more” or “Show less” buttons on individual posts and Reels. The new plain language prompt simply makes the process faster and more intuitive for users who never touch their settings.
